Balance Installation

SINGLE/DOUBLE HUNG WINDOWS

For Replacing CHANNEL BALANCES:

Step 1: Remove Old Balances

  1. Remove plastic or rubber stop (Figure 1). Pull up “takeout” clips in frame-jambs (Figure 2). Balances will be held in place by takeout clip when the window is raised up in Step 1, b.
  2. Raise window to its uppermost position and push into either side frame-jamb. Rotate the opposite side inwards and remove the window (Figure 3).
  3. Firmly grasp channel balance with both hands and pull downward against balance tension until top balance end clears takeout clip. Tilt balance toward the center of the window and slowly allow tension to release by moving balance upward. After tension is released, remove the cord terminal clip from the hole in frame-jamb. Repeat for other balance (Figure 4).

Step 2: Select Matching Balances and Ends (Fig. 5)

  1. Select new balances by matching the ID number stamped on the balance and by matching the channel depth and channel width to the item in our catalog.
  2. Select the new top and bottom ends by identifying them in our catalog.

Step 3: Install New Window Balances and Reinsert Window

  2. Raise window to its uppermost position and push into either side frame-jamb. Rotate the opposite side inwards and remove the window (Figure 3).
  3. Remove plastic or rubber stop (Figure 1). Pull up “takeout” clips in frame-jambs (Figure 2). Balances will be held in place by takeout clip when the window is raised up in Step 1, b.

For Replacing TUBE BALANCES (a tube balance tensioning tool is required to remove tube balances and properly install new balances):

Step 1: Remove Old Balances

  1. Remove plastic or rubber stops from each side of the window frame (Figure 6). Raise window to its uppermost position and push into either side frame-jamb. Rotate the opposite side inwards and remove the window (Figure 7).
  2. Insert tensioning tool into the hole at the bottom of the balance rod. With a firm hold on tensioning tool, disengage balance rod from metal retainer (Figure 8) by pulling downward and unwind all tension and rotating rod counter-clockwise. When all tension is unwound, unhook the tensioning tool and let the balance rod fall to the bottom of the window. Repeat for other balances.

Step 2: Select New Balance

  1. Select new balances by matching the tube length, rod length, tube diameter, and color of nylon bearing to the item in our catalog.

Step 3: Install New Window Balances and Reinsert Window

  2. Remove plastic or rubber stops from each side of the window frame (Figure 6). Raise window to its uppermost position and push into either side frame-jamb. Rotate the opposite side inwards and remove the window (Figure 7).

For Replacing CROSS-PIN BALANCES (a tensioning tool is required to remove tube balances and properly install new balances):

Step 1: Remove Old Balances

  1. Remove plastic or rubber stops from each side of the window frame (Figure 10). Raise window to its uppermost position and keep in place using a two-by-four cut to size.
  2. Insert tensioning tool into the hole at the bottom of the balance rod. With a firm hold on the tensioning tool, disengage rod cross-pins from window clip or bracket by pulling downward and unwind all tension and rotating rod counter-clockwise (Figure 11).
  3. Lower window. Unscrew balance at top of the window and slide balance and rod out of window frame. Repeat for other balance (Figure 12).

Step 2: Select New Balance and Window Clips or Brackets

  1. Select new balances by matching the tube length, rod length, tube diameter, and color of nylon bearing to the item in our catalog.
  2. Select window clips or brackets and purchase separately.

Step 3: Install New Window Balances and Reinsert Window

  1. Lower window. Unscrew balance at top of the window and slide balance and rod out of window frame. Repeat for other balance (Figure 12).
  2. Insert tensioning tool into the hole at the bottom of the balance rod. With a firm hold on the tensioning tool, disengage rod cross-pins from window clip or bracket by pulling downward and unwind all tension and rotating rod counter-clockwise (Figure 11).
  3. Remove plastic or rubber stops from each side of the window frame (Figure 10). Raise window to its uppermost position and keep in place using a two-by-four cut to size.

TILT-IN WINDOWS

For Replacing Tilt-In Window Balances (a tensioning tool is required to remove tube balances and properly install new balances):

Step 1: Remove Old Balances

  1. Slide window up 4” – 6” and tilt to a horizontal position. Push down on one side and pull up on the other side to remove the window (Figure 13)
  2. Grasp tensioning tool firmly and engage onto balance rod pins. Pull rod down and out of pivot lock shoe. With tensioning tool still engaged, slowly allow balance rod to unwind to release tension. When all tension is unwound, unhook the tensioning tool and let the balance rod fall to the bottom of the window. Repeat for other balances.
  3. Unscrew balance screw at top of the window jamb-frame. Repeat for other balance (Figure 14).

Step 2: Select New Balance and Pivot Lock Shoe

  1. Select new balances by matching the tube length, rod length, tube diameter, and color of nylon bearing to the item in our catalog.
  2. Select pivot lock shoe and purchase separately. NOTE: Pivot lock shoes and pivot bars enable the window to tilt. Pivot lock shoe is inserted and slides in the jamb of the frame.

Step 3: Install New Window Balances and Reinsert Window

  1. Unscrew balance screw at top of the window jamb-frame. Repeat for other balance (Figure 14).
  3. Slide window up 4” – 6” and tilt to a horizontal position. Push down on one side and pull up on the other side to remove the window (Figure 13)
